Go Communications Copyright 1990 Les Novell
December 3, 1990
Dear reader,
Congratulations, you now have obtained a copy of the premier
version of Go Communications, a new communications program that
is high powered and easy to use.
Let me tell you a little about this program before we get
started. I have been working on Go Communications for about 10
months (since February 1990) in my spare time. I've used my
bulletin board system, my experiences in communications, and
advice from sources such as polls and my beta testers (to whom I
am deeply indebted to) to tailor this program. My sincerest hope
is to create a program that will be suitable and well-liked by
anyone who uses it. This, I've found, is nearly impossible and
compromises must be made.
The program itself compiles to approximately 40,000 lines
using Borland's Turbo C++ IDE, and a small portion was assembled
with Turbo Assembler.
Go Communications most features of other communications
programs, and many features that conventional communications programs lack.
∙ Quick configuration!
- Go will automatically determine the location
of your modem and its baud rate
- Go will emulate Qmodem, Procomm, Boyan, and Telix
keysets or use its own keyset
- Go will seek out and automatically install
DSZ, Punter, MPt, Lynx, Puma, and Jmodem
external protocols
- Pull-down menus for configuration
∙ Flexibility
- Go will allow you to redefine almost ANY key
on your keyboard. All program functions are
controlled through macros which can be
reprogrammed
- A unique command screen will change
dynamically with the macros to reflect what
key is associated with what function
- The command screen allows you to select a
program function from a list using a
highlight bar
- There is limited mouse support (run GOMOUSE.BAT)
∙ A unique phone dialer
- Point and shoot method of dialing. Includes
marking of numbers to dial, and a
sophisticated multiple mark command.
- Reads and can modify Go, Qmodem 4.0, Procomm
2.4.2, Procomm+, Telix, and Boyan phone
files.
- "XFer entry" command will send the name and
phone number of the highlighted entry.
- Many more goodies!
∙ A directory manager
- Tree-like representation of directories
- Create and delete directories
- Find file across all directories and in
archives
∙ A file manager
- Handles up to 500 files per directory
- Delete, Copy, View, Execute, Rename, Upload
- Mark files for Delete, Copy, or Upload
- Marking files for upload utilizes Zmodem,
Puma, MPt, and YModem batch uploads (upload
500 files in one file transfer)
- Automatically displays the contents of a ZIP files.
∙ Doorway mode (for full-screen editors and dos shells)
∙ Ansi color changing (for changing color in messages, for
example)
∙ A full-featured wordstar-like editor
∙ Auto-download support for Zmodem, MPt, and Puma protocols
∙ Message upload will upload messages typed in an editor directly
into your message
∙ Speeds up to 115,200 baud
∙ And MORE!
Now, for the "bad" news... Go is missing:
∙ Good documentation
∙ A script language
∙ A host mode
∙ VT100 and other common emulations (ANSI is included)
Yes, Go falls short in those areas. However, I am not
intending to leave things this way. I am working hard to provide
these major missing things. I hope to include them in version 2.0
of Go Communications. I cannot yet set a release date for that
update because I have many other responsibilities. The
documentation for registered users will be a laser printed bound
manual of approximately 100 to 150 pages. The script language
will be sophisticated enough to handle all applications, plus it
will have a "learn logon" feature. The host mode that will be
released with Go Communications will be a full fledged, flexible
BBS program called Design A BBS. I am currently running my BBS on
this custom software. However, before I release it it'll have to
be redesigned. VT100 and other emulations will be added as I get
information on them. The main reason why they aren't included is
I don't have a source of information about them. I'll keep
searching! (Perhaps someone reading this has some information for
me?)
As you can see, all of this together will make a incredibly
comprehensive communications system.
When you try out Go communications, here are some things you
need to know:
∙ Unarchive go to the drive or directory of your choice
∙ Change to the Go directory and type GO at the DOS prompt (or GOMOUSE)
∙ Go will search in the current directory, in the
subdirectory PROTOCOL, in the root directory, and anywhere in
your path for download/upload protocols it recognizes
∙ This is by no means a complete documentation of Go Communications!
Basic registration is $20
That includes:

A quick note about the author (me!)
---------------------------------------------
I am 17 years of age, I am a senior at Gunderson High School
in San Jose, California. I have been programming since 6th grade.
Next year I will be going off to college, but if this program
goes over well I am going to continue supporting it and enhancing
it. I enjoy programming, journalism, and running my BBS in my
free time. I am dedicated to offering user-friendly programs. I
would like to discourage the idea that teenagers are the
malicious crackers, pirates, and phreaks that most people believe
they are. I also discourage all forms of software piracy. I would
like to encourage computer literacy and especially the
introduction of the world of computer communications to all
peoples.
